The host of the radio talk show Ask the Doctor, Dr. Michael Lange, OD, is an optometrist who has seen patients at his Florida-based office since 1993. In conjunction with his work as an optometrist, Dr. Michael Lange also developed his own line of eye vitamins, Fortifeye, which offers Zinc Free Macular Defense, a vitamin that is designed to combat age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is an eye disorder that causes vision loss as a person reaches an advanced age. More than 10 million Americans are living with this incurable disease, which causes the central portion of the retina to deteriorate, impacting one’s ability to see fine details.

Risk factors for AMD include being 55 years of age or older, being Caucasian, and having a relatives who have developed the disease. Smoking has also been noted to increase the likelihood that a person will develop the condition. While there is no treatment for AMD, some experts suggest that exercise and a healthy diet may help slow vision loss for people who are in its early stages.
